I have an assignment to take a portrait of one of our test pilots who recently logged 10,000 flight hours - a major accomplishment, that equates to 416.66666 days of flight. Anyway, I need to get him in front of an aircraft, holding his helmet, The Right Stuff, look. Depending on the weather, I'm thinking of trying a hi-speed sync shot, just to say I tried it. Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Fred
Hi Fred
ReplyDeleteThis might be too late for your assignment but
on strobist.com Mr. Dave Hobby made some very nice pictures of a helicopter in air with flashes inside the cockpit. You may have seen it all ready on his blog, but here it is. Follow the two links:

Maybe you can use the idea for a ground shot too?
I am looking forward to see the pictures.
By the way, nice to hear from you folks again. Had a great time and made some nice picks "over there", but it is gooooood to be back home in the country of the dark lager...;o)
Best wishes, Bjarne
Hey Bjarne - Great to hear from you! No I haven't taken the photo yet - the pilot has the flu!
ReplyDeleteI did see that post from Strobist, I think it was last year. Very nice. I remember sending it over to the pilots trying to sell them on the idea of doing something similar. The problem is they are required by the government to have wheels on the ground at least 30 minutes before sunset. I do have that tucked away for the next time I'm on an Army Base. The Army would love to do something like that.
Keep posting and enjoy the lager!
Fred
Hi Fred,
ReplyDeleteI envy you your shoot. (I have a thing about pilots and planes.) Don't know what time of day you will be shooting, but reading through The Hot Shoe Diaries, I was quite taken with the dramatic effect that Joe got in the photo of the sheriff (page 98). Using the speed lights and basically eliminating most of the available light turned a very good photograph into a dramatic winner. And he makes it sound so easy.
Can't wait to see your pix

PS Hi Bjarne!!
