I'm working on getting a picture of a friend running the stairs at Red Rocks. I know I have the flash all wrong, but I made a few attempts anyhow. In this shot the sun rises behind him and sets into his face.

Took a business picture for a lawyer on 52nd floor downtown but only had 10 minutes to set up. Used high shutter speed to decrease light out the window.

A teacher at Kent Denver High School.
I take 10 pictures around the high school every week and they go into an on-line newspaper. I plan to just keep taking them until a pattern evolves that I like.
I would very much appreciate ideas about the running pictures, or anything.
first great attorney portrait.
ReplyDeletesecond I think there is so much potential in
the stair runner shot. once you get your exposure down (seems a bit hot to me)
shoot the angle you have, which is strong,
then get closer, almost make him run over you
and you camera. shoot wide. then shoot it long
and isolate. just mu two cents but I think this shoot is worth fighting for so. Have fun!
I agree with Chris that this shot is worth fighting for. I'd be curious to know where do you find the light at golden hour? I would image that those rocks are showing some beautiful color at dawn or dusk. I think a wide and close shot would be nice. Maybe you can tuck a little light under one of the bleachers and trip it as he's coming up. But don't loose the color of those rocks! Go crazy with it, that's such a beautiful location.

Great pictures Mom! That businessman looks like some great stock photography to me.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately the color of the rocks is great at sunrise. I'm ok with a 5:30 wake up, but my runner friend is resisting. I will keep trying for this shot and thanks for the help Chris and Fred.
ReplyDeleteHi Carol - I was just thinking about another variation on you runner shot. What you'll need is a bottle of water, someone willing to get up at O dark hundred and a spray bottle of water. Have your subject just sit, on the on the steps, holding a water bottle like they've just completed a 30 min run up and down then spray them down with the spray bottle. Get you lights in place wait for Mr. Sun and see what happens? Not as thrilling as running but you'll have more control over the shot. Have fun! Fred
ReplyDeleteI know you are going to nail the runner shot sooner or later. I love the perspective of the first one. Have you thought of gelling your flash to suggest the golden hour light? Probably wouldn't work for the rocks, though, without lots and lots of speedlights. Whatever else you do, you definitely have to think of a bribe to get your subject up and running before dawn. Good luck!
